Summer Reading Programme
5-6 week reading
incentive programme for pre-school to Year 8 children. 450
places are available for children reading in English and Maori.
Registrations for the programme are in late November. The
programme encourages reading through fun packed reading activities
and special programmes. Reading for the programme is done
at home and progress is recorded at the time of reporting
to a library staff member at the library.
Individual attention
and staff support are a feature of the programme which aims
:
- To interest, encourage and stimulate children to enjoy
reading.
- To increase reading skills in the widest sense, including
communication and creativity and thus develop self-esteem.
- To encourage caregivers to become involved with their
children's reading at home - one of the most powerful tools
for creating life-long learners.
- To encourage children to become regular library users
by fostering positive relationships between families, public
libraries and librarians.
The programme is
available at Masterton Library, free of charge, through the
sponsorship of the Eastern
and Central Community Trust and Masterton
Trust House.
The
ECREAD'N Eastern and Central Reading Encouragement and Development
Network produces the programme and Masterton Library is
one of the 23 Eastern and Central Region libraries delivering
the programme.
