I struggled to get through
this book. What I liked best was his vivid descriptive detail
of places and events so that you felt you could see it.
However, for me it didn’t flow
enough and he kept going back to events in the past. A very sad
ending as he and his wife and baby leave their place in the
country and move out again. They didn’t want to move but were
forced to because of financial difficulties.

The children of a New Zealand ex POW look back fifty years to try to understand the man who was their father. After WWII he was a war crimes investigator in Japan. He copied and kept transcripts of evidence which now begin appearing. A TV interviewer is trying to find out if he was a hero or guilty of acts of revenge then. The family are trying to find out the truth. Their mother died years before and their father is deteriorating rapidly in a nursing home and then dies. They make a trip to the area of a POW massacre in Kuching and other places their father had been. They find answers to some of their many questions and can then get on with their own lives. Disturbing at times - no wonder so many New Zealand ex-soldiers are reluctant to talk of their wartime experiences.

The final novel in this trilogy of historical Queensland. Wallarie is the last of one of the aboriginal tribes and this story interweaves the dreamtime and also the Celtic history of the Duffy and McIntosh clans who settle in Queensland. A powerful story of their lives and loves interweaving over the generations. Very interesting and absorbing story with Wallarie outliving most of the characters and seeing vast changes in the lives of those around him. Peter Watt – one of the best.
The trilogy
Cry of the curlew
Shadow of the osprey
