Category : Fiction
Suggested Audience :
A widow living in her small cottage on a Wellington hillside overlooking the sea. She dabbles in a bit of painting enjoys her wild garden where she grows cutting and seeds she has picked up in various places. She edits gardening books for a small publisher. Happy to potter around she has ‘friend’s who are intent on trying to partner her with unsuitable men – particularly at Christmas time. After anticipating another Christmas as in the past, her Christmas eventually turns out to be very enjoyable. A pleasant story about an ordinary woman who wants to be in charge of her own destiny. This is the first book I have read from Shonagh Koea and will be looking for more.

Kendra, leases a flat from a single man with a boy and a girl (6 year old twins). The children make friends with her and with the aid of an imaginary friend and the fictional marshmallows she brings some fun into their lives. Their mother takes them on a visit but does not return them. The father refuses to bring in the police, hoping she will contact him. Meanwhile, a man from Kendra’s past threatens her unless she meets him! She meets him in a café and shows him she is not the meek and mild woman he terrorized 12 years earlier. Exit this man to her great relief! The children make contact and Kendra takes the father to where they are staying with their mother. The mother admits she needs treatment and the children are restored to their fathers care. A good read showing there is hope and love in this modern world.
